What is a SNP?
A SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) is a tiny change in your DNA sequence. DNA acts like a set of instructions for building proteins and enzymes, which run nearly every process in your body. When a SNP occurs, it can alter how those instructions are read.
Think of it like a typo in a recipe. Sometimes the meal still turns out fine—but other times, a small error in the instructions changes the entire dish.
How SNPs Affect Enzymes and Proteins
Proteins and enzymes are built from amino acids. If a SNP alters the genetic code, it can change the amino acid sequence and therefore the structure of the protein. When that happens, the enzyme may not work as efficiently—or at all.
Some common examples include:
MTHFR C677T: In people with two copies of this SNP (homozygous), the MTHFR enzyme functions at only about 30% of its normal capacity. That means folate isn’t processed correctly, which can leave you tired, sluggish, and struggling to make energy.
