The following are KEY studies indicating the use and functionality of GSH (reduced glutathione). It’s important to recognize GSH is the version of glutathione that actively functions in our bodies and immune system. GSSG or oxidized glutathione is spent, no longer functional, until chemically changed back to GSH. This redox process requires energy and many genetic insufficiencies cause a lack of glutathione reduction causing major intracellular deficiencies.
Role of glutathione in immunity and inflammation in the lung
This is an excellent article about all the mechanisms at work and can be applied to the whole body, not just the lung.
This review outlines the redox-sensitive steps of the cellular mechanisms implicated in inflammation and host defense against infection, and describes how GSH (reduced glutathione) is not only important as an antioxidant but also as a signaling molecule.
Randomized controlled trial of oral glutathione supplementation on body stores of glutathione.
This is Setria’s study. We use Setria in our VARS Glutathione. It shows that GSH levels stored in various cells increased. These findings show, for the first time, that daily consumption of GSH supplements was effective at increasing body compartment stores of GSH. This study showed an increase over 6 months. Setria Glutathione put through our patented system allows this increase to work in hours vs weeks.
Antiviral and immunomodulatory properties of new pro-glutathione (GSH) molecules.
The observations reported herein show that pro-GSH molecules represent new therapeutic agents to treat antiviral infections and Th2-mediated diseases such as allergic disorders and AIDS.
The Role of Glutathione in Viral Diseases of the Central Nervous System
The depletion of GSH levels characterizes viral infections and associated-disease progression. Many studies correlated the GSH levels with immune response and suggest adding the glutathione replenishment to highly active antiviral treatment.
Glutathione increase by the n-butanoyl glutathione derivative (GSH-C4) inhibits viral replication and induces a predominant Th1 immune profile in old mice infected with influenza virus.
During aging, glutathione (GSH) content declines and the immune system undergoes a deficiency in the induction of Th1 response. Reduced secretion of Th1 cytokines, which is associated with GSH depletion, could weaken the host defenses against viral infections. Old mice had lower GSH than young mice in organs. Also the gene expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers involved in GSH metabolism and folding of proteins, that is, Nrf2 and PDI, was reduced. Giving a form of GSH would reverse all this.
GSH and analogs in antiviral therapy.
A deficiency in GSH puts the cell at risk for oxidative damage. An imbalance in GSH is observed in a wide range of pathologies, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cystic fibrosis (CF), several viral infections including HIV-1, as well as in aging. Several reports have provided evidence for the use of GSH and molecules able to replenish intracellular GSH levels in antiviral therapy.
Glutathione Fine-Tunes the Innate Immune Response toward Antiviral Pathways in a Macrophage Cell Line Independently of Its Antioxidant Properties.
Glutathione (GSH), a major cellular antioxidant, is considered an inhibitor of the inflammatory response involving reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, evidence is largely based on experiments with exogenously added antioxidants/reducing agents or pro-oxidants. We conclude that the main function of endogenous GSH is not to limit inflammation but to fine-tune the innate immune response to infection.
Oral supplementation with liposomal glutathione elevates body stores of glutathione and markers of immune function.
GSH levels were elevated after 1 week with maximum increases of 40% in whole blood, 25% in erythrocytes, 28% in plasma and 100% in PBMCs occurring after 2 weeks (P<0.05).
Evidence for antiviral activity of glutathione: in vitro inhibition of herpes simplex virus type 1 replication.
This study showed how exogenous GSH was able to inhibit the late stages of viral replication for HSV-1, and was even able to rescue infected cells after 24 hours of infection. GSH was able to do this without affecting normal cellular metabolism or function, allowing the cell to function normally.
Reduced Glutathione can be utilized for so many applications, but only a truly functional GSH is capable to delivering the wanted results. Maintaining GSH in its reduced form is the only way to achieve these results.
